This project is a trip to the future where we envision, create, and discuss what this future will look like. In particular it is a trip to the future where you will focus on how technology might be used in education. But while education is important, and certainly it is for us, emerging technologies affect much more than just our little education space. So this project asks you to look outside your sphere of education into other areas of society that are important too.
It is a chance for you to explore the impacts that these technologies have on other aspects of your life - whether it be in entertainment and leisure, science and the environment, businees and empolyment and government.
This project may be quite different from many that you have done. The future has yet to unfold, so all of your work is really about predicting, well ... researching as best you can and predicting.
Alan Kay is a renowned "father figure" in the realm of personal computing. Alan made the observation that "The best way to predict the future is to invent it". This is your chance to do something similar.
Your challenge is to investigate, research, discuss, analyse and evaluate one of the six emerging technologies identified in the 2008 Horizon Report. Then, in collaboration with your team members, create a wiki page to show what YOU have found out about the technology and what YOU think the future holds for us all with the application of this technology.
This is a large task. You will need to investigate your technologies in relation to the subjects that have given time to this project. So, your technolgy needs to have potential impacts and developments in relation to Social Studies, English, Science, Religious Studies, Technology, Art, Music, Health and PE. This is where your other teachers will be helpful - you'll need to discuss ideas with them,
Each group in the class will then see their wiki page as part of the whole class wiki on the role that these emerging technologies will play in the future of education here at Dio.
In addition, each team will create a short piece of multimedia(eg a short video) that relates to an aspect of your research and exploration. This will be done in consultation with your teachers - the topic of your video will be to explore the implications of your technology in one or more of the areas of impact. (Education; Science, Health and the Environment; Arts, Entertainment and Leisure; Business, Employment and Government.
You will present your findings via a formal presentation to the class and teachers, and hopefully your parents. This will happen on the last day or two of the course.
TECHNOLOGY RESTRICTIONS:
We are trying to explore new technologies for this exercise. This means that the use of the usual technologies - things like Moviemaker, MS Office, Powerpoint etc are not allowed. You will need to use web based applications (hosted applications) for all of your work. Which ones you use will be up to you - but they must be "legal" (ie make sure you are old enough to use them).
To get you started we'll use Google Apps, and Google Notebook to help in your research. In addition you will use del.ici.ous as your bookmarking tool.
Technologies impact more than just education. You will have the opportunity to analyse the trends or metatrends in these areas of impact.
education
employment, politics and government
arts, entertainment and leisure
science and environment, health
These areas of impact are a version of the areas of impact that we study in the IB ITGS course. We'll look at these in a "quiet way" - hopefully there will be the opportunity to involve outside people/businesses for some of this.
How to get started
Make sure you can use Delicious and understand the tagging standards. Here is a help file for using delicious.
You will need to have access to our cloud computing site - try heading to this link AFTER you have installed the ISA 2006 client software and rebooted your laptop.

Example: Things that are tagged hz08 and also video will go to the link below -- DO NOT use the + -- that is the symbol that del.icio.us uses to mean AND -- so you'll have hz08 video in the tags -- if you want to also send it to your subgroup, use your subgroup tag below also.
